Known Issues and Clarifications

General <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Remove beta and other pre-release versions of the Pocket PC 2002 SDK before installing

Use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to uninstall any beta or other pre-release versions of the Pocket PC 2002 SDK. As part of this uninstall process you will be asked whether you wish to uninstall Platform Manager components. You must uninstall these components. After completing the uninstall process, which may include rebooting your computer, you can successfully install the release version of the SDK.

Installing with the Microsoft Smartphone 2002 SDK

If you are installing the beta or release version of the Smartphone 2002 SDK on the same development workstation as the Pocket PC 2002 SDK, you must install the Pocket PC 2002 release SDK first. If you have already installed any version of the Smartphone 2002 SDK, you must uninstall it, install the Pocket PC 2002 SDK, and then reinstall the Smartphone 2002 SDK.

Exit eMbedded Visual C++ and eMbedded Visual Basic before installing

The SDK installation will not proceed if eMbedded Visual C++, eMbedded Visual Basic, or any of the SDK remote tools such as the Registry Editor, File Viewer, etc, are currently running.

Changing the Memory Configuration of the Emulator

By default, the emulator will start up with about 16MB of RAM available for the device – with approximately 8MB each for Program Memory and Object Store. Generally, this is sufficient and reduces the physical memory requirement on the development machine hosting the emulator. However, if you wish to increase the amount of memory available within the emulator, change the Memory value in this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Tools\Platform Manager\{F384D888-F9AA-11D1-BB9E-00A0C9C9CCEE}\{DE9660AC-85D3-4C63-A6AF-46A3B3B83737}\{F384D894-F9AA-11D1-BB9E-00A0C9C9CCEE}\{67C8D913-F0CF-486A-8CF0-CE7D116225E8}

From 32 to 48 or 64.

This value indicates the total amount of memory available to the emulator for both the Pocket PC 2002 image and the available memory. The image requires between 16 and 24MB depending on the language version of the image (Japanese, Chinese Simplified, and Chinese Traditional images are approximately 24MB) and whether the image includes support for GSM radios.

Emulator window does not automatically come to the foreground

When an application is deployed from eMbedded Visual Basic or eMbedded Visual C++ to the emulator, the emulator will start up if it is not already running, but it will not activate or receive focus automatically. The user must click on the Windows Task Bar button for the emulator or the emulator window itself to bring it to the foreground.

Emulator requires network connection or loopback adapter

To use the emulator, you need to either have an active network connection or have installed the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q236/8/69.ASP

Emulator does not support voice recording

This version of the emulator supports full audio playback, but does not support recording. This is true even if audio input is supported on the host PC. This will be addressed in a future release.

Deploying application to non-English device or emulator image from eVB or eVC may cause an error

Normally, eVB and eVC deploy their applications to the “\Windows\Start Menu” path on the device or emulator. When using a non-English device or emulator image, this will result in an error message:

The download path doesn't exist for \Windows\Start menu\<app name>, the file will be skipped.

To correct this in eVC:

  • Select the Project-Settings menu item
  • Click on the Debug tab
  • Enter the correct path for the language in question in the Download Directory edit box

To correct this in eVB:

  • Select the Project-<project name> Properties menu item
  • Enter the correct path for the language in question in the Remote Path edit box. Note that in eVB, you must include the name of the .VB file in this path.

Embedded Visual C++ 3.0

Pocket PC 2002 SDK not compatible with eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0

The Pocket PC 2002 SDK is not compatible with the eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 product that is released with the Window CE.Net Platform Builder product.

Emulator requires x86 compiler when used with eMbedded Visual C++

Since the new emulator runs binaries compiled for x86, you must have the x86 compiler installed to use the emulator from eVC++. By default, the eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 install includes the x86 compiler, but if you performed a custom installation and deselected this compiler, follow these steps to install it:

  • From the Start menu, select Settings – Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs
  • In the Add/Remove Programs list, select Microsoft eMbedded Visual Tools
  • Click the Change/Remove button for eMbedded Visual Tools
  • In the eMbedded Visual Tools Setup dialog, click the Add/Remove button
  • Click on eMbedded Visual C++ 3.0
  • Click the Change Option button
  • When the list of compilers is displayed, ensure you have installed ARM (for real Pocket PC 2002 hardware devices) and x86 (for the emulator)
  • Click the OK button
  • Click the Continue button
  • Complete the installation as directed by the setup wizard.

Note: If you are developing applications only for Pocket PC 2002, you require only the ARM and x86 compilers. Developing for the original Pocket PC requires ARM, SH3, MIPS, and x86em compilers.

Select x86 Configuration when targeting the emulator in eMbedded Visual C++

When building an application for the emulator in eVC++, make sure the Active Configuration is set to either “Win32 (WCE x86) Debug” or “Win32 (WCE x86) Release” and the Default Device is set to “Pocket PC 2002 Emulation”.

eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0

eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0 must be installed on the C drive

In order to function properly, eVB must be installed on the C drive. The Pocket PC 2002 SDK may be installed on any drive.

Intermittent problems connecting to emulator from eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0

Some systems exhibit a very intermittent problem connecting to the emulator that causes an error message to be displayed: “Unable to get connection to emulation or the device.  Please retry this operation.” This may occur when starting or stopping an application from the development environment. If this error occurs when attempting to launch the application from eVB, simply retrying should result in success. If the error occurs when stopping an application, no additional action is necessary. This problem results from a unique combination of timing issues involving the operating system, eVB and Platform Manager.
